This year’s convention theme, “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” draws inspiration from a 1963 speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The theme emphasizes the importance of immediate action in the face of threats to civil rights, healthcare, voting access, and economic equity. According to Karen Boykin-Towns, Vice Chair of the NAACP’s Board of Directors, the theme aligns with current struggles to protect democracy and social justice.

Johnson emphasized that the NAACP convention must be a safe and inclusive space to foster multiracial advocacy and policy planning. He noted that giving a platform to Trump would contradict the convention’s purpose. “We will not entertain anyone who operates against our mission and values,” he said.
Community Engagement at the Convention
Despite Donald Trump being snubbed, the 2025 convention promises robust community participation. A key feature is “The Hub,” a 50,000-square-foot interactive space that will include a Health and Wellness Zone, Career Fair, vendor stalls, and technology centers. This space, free for the public, is aimed at increasing community engagement and promoting Black culture, health, and financial literacy.
Economic Impact of the Convention
Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles highlighted the economic boost the city expects from the convention. With events spread across the city’s venues, businesses such as restaurants, museums, and local shops are expected to see increased foot traffic and revenue. The 2024 convention in Las Vegas generated $16.7 million, and this year’s event is projected to exceed that amount.
Convention as a Platform for Policy and Advocacy
The NAACP will use the convention to formulate national policies and advocacy strategies on issues such as voting rights, disaster relief, and access to housing and healthcare. Leon Russell, Chair of the Board of Directors, said the goal is to ensure that public policy improves lives rather than marginalizes citizens. “Public policy implemented improperly can destroy democracy,” he warned.

Ultimately, Donald Trump was snubbed because NAACP leaders felt his actions and rhetoric were incompatible with the organization’s values. Johnson accused Trump of promoting a fascist playbook rather than upholding constitutional principles. With threats to civil rights on the rise, the NAACP determined that allowing Trump a platform would undermine their mission.

As the NAACP prepares for its 116th annual convention, it calls on Americans of all political affiliations who believe in democracy to come together. “We welcome anyone who supports civil rights,” Johnson said.
