Cory Booker Filibuster: Senator’s Stand Against a National Crisis
For nearly 17 hours, Cory Booker’s filibuster has covered a wide range of pressing issues raised by the American people.
The New Jersey senator has kept his social media followers updated, sharing clips of his speech where he discusses Medicaid and Medicare access, Social Security concerns, the impact of tariffs, and the dismantling of the Department of Education.
As of noon on Tuesday, Cory Booker’s filibuster was still ongoing, with the senator refusing to yield the floor. Other Democratic lawmakers have occasionally joined in, posing questions and making remarks in support of his cause.
“I am going to go for as long as I’m physically able,” Booker declared, emphasizing his determination to highlight what he describes as a national “crisis” created by former President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.
Cory Booker’s filibuster began on Monday night at 7 p.m. with the intent of speaking for as long as possible. He took the Senate floor, criticizing the policies of Trump and Musk, which he claims have harmed American democracy, financial stability, and public safety.
In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Booker announced, “I’m about to go to the Senate floor, where I intend to be recognized. And when I am, I’m not going to stop speaking.”
By Tuesday morning, Cory Booker’s filibuster had surpassed the 16-hour mark, showing no signs of stopping. “I’ve got fuel in the tank, man,” he said after 15 hours of continuous speech.
Since taking the floor, Booker has remained standing, unable to eat, sit, or leave the small space around his desk. While there have been other lengthy filibusters in Senate history, the record remains with Sen. Strom Thurmond, who spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes in 1957 against the Civil Rights Act.
Throughout his speech, Booker has touched on several national and global concerns, including:
He has also read letters from constituents and quoted civil rights leaders like the late Sen. John Lewis, advocating for justice and equality.
As long as Cory Booker’s filibuster continues, Senate proceedings remain stalled. The New Jersey senator has been joined by key Democratic figures, including Chuck Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth Warren, and Chris Coons, who have posed questions, allowing Booker brief pauses while still retaining the floor.
At the start of his speech, Booker made his intent clear: “I rise tonight because I sincerely believe our country is in crisis. This is not about party politics—many of the people reaching out to my office in fear and distress identify as Republicans.”
So far, Booker’s marathon speech has captured national attention, adding to the long history of filibusters used as a form of political protest in the U.S. Senate. Whether he will break any records remains to be seen, but his unwavering stand has already made headlines.
